"The power of a book lies in its power to turn a solitary act into a shared vision. As long as we have books, we are not alone".
~Laura Bush
"Hello. How are you? How was your day?" Those are the words I am supposed to ask the students, um... not the other way around. But, there she is. There is this awesome student coming into the library at the end of the day asking ME... "How was your day?" I look up from my desk, instantly stopping what I am doing because there is nothing as important as thinking about her question. How was my day? Our eyes connect, I smile and think about the conversations from the day. I think about the connections students made with books. I answered her... "My day was really great". Of course, I had to know about her day and then we did the thing that two people do when you have a mutual respect for words in print; you swoon over some of your favorite reads. Sometimes the best things start with Hello.
Hello and welcome to my blog. I've tried a few times to get this blog going. This is the year... I know it... I can feel it. So why Hello Wednesday? Well, Monday comes way too fast and I know me and I won't have my thoughts and ideas ready and Wednesday is in the middle of the week. It gives me time to percolate and not fail to produce. So with that... Welcome to Hello Wednesday! What is this blog about and why? I wrote this for my twitter profile and I think it describes me best: Seymour Sarason, 2004 wrote: "Learning is not a thing. Learning is a process that occurs in an interpersonal and group context, and it is always composed of an interaction of factors to which we append labels such as motivation, cognition, emotion or affect, and attitude." I am an educator and lifewide learner. I am curious. I doodle and giggle. I like to push my thinking and hopefully yours and sometimes I daydream. What's got me curious right now? Design thinking... the social dynamics to rethink and redesign the classroom. What makes learning great? How does technology affirm and advance the relationships between educators and students? I am starting my 19th year in education, having served all grades; now working in one of the coolest or as one of the students described it "edgy" libraries, The Cube at Castleberry High School. I hope to provide some Wednesday Wisdom from the front line of being a high school librarian, educator and learner (I am a doctoral candidate in a PhD program) and also a little Wednesday Workout... oh, not that kind of workout! My plan is to share an article or two from the week I read, a quote that inspired me and why, a cool tech tool and some ideas to apply and a neat idea from an educator and maybe what I think I might do with it in the library or classroom. There might be some bonus words also. Hey, it is my blog, right? But for this week, I am only getting warmed up, so I have a great article that really spoke to me about free and independent reading. We have started with 10 minutes in our ELA classrooms for students every day M-Th (Friday is a reflective day, for students to think about, share, discuss, etc. about what they read... NOT AN ASSESSMENT... UGH). 10 minutes of independent, free reading... time for "me" reading. Think you don't have time? Check out this article for some ideas that might change your mind. See you next Wednesday!
